Dangerous Encounters – Active Shooter Response

presented by Michael Victoroff, MD, Risk Management Consultant for Health Information Technology at COPIC

The basics of the “Run-Hide-Fight” standard being taught by law enforcement agencies to organizations needing to develop an Active Shooter Response Plan, to comply with new federal guidelines.

What do you do in a potentially deadly encounter in the healthcare workplace? Dealing with angry patients or family members is unfortunately not a rare event. Medicine deals with some of the deepest human stresses, and a fraction of the population reacts to intolerable pressure with threats or violence. De-escalation and therapeutic listening are valuable skills. But, what do you do when the talk fails and the gun comes out? Like fire, flood and Ebola, healthcare facilities are required to have an active shooter response plan in place.

    • Security consultants have dramatically changed their advice about managing workplace violence in light of new threat patterns. This program will give practical guidance about how to survive potentially dangerous encounters in healthcare facilities and offices. Workforce planning, training and simulation will be discussed, along with physical countermeasures and crisis communications. We will also address liability and the legal implications of self-defense.

    ·         Categorize violent encounters that healthcare providers and facilities should prepare for

    ·         Identify vulnerabilities and assets that determine the response to (and outcome of) a dangerous encounter

    ·         Review current concepts and guidelines for survival in active shooter and other violent scenarios

*COPIC Points will be available - one physician per practice will receive 1 COPIC point for a practice representative attending.  Maximum of one point per practice.  The attendee must indicate which physician they want to receive the point.
